What is BMI?

Definition

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used measure to determine if your weight is within the normal range for your height. It might sound complicated, but your BMI is just a calculation using the ratio of your weight to your height to determine how much body fat you have.

Usage

This BMI calculator calculates body mass index from your Weight and Height. To use the tool, enter your weight in Kilograms or Pounds and your height in Centimeters or Feet/Inches, and then press the "Calculate" button. For example, if you enter your weight as 75 Kg. and your Height as 5 feet and 7 inches, the tool will calculate your BMI as 25.95 and also interpret this value as indicative of "Overweight" condition.

Interpretation

As per WHO and USDA guidelines, BMI is interpreted as follows:

• If BMI is less than 18.5, underweight
• If BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, normal weight
• If BMI is between 25 and 29.9, overweight
• If BMI is between 30 and 39.9, obese
• If BMI is 40 or over, dangerously obese

If your BMI indicates any condition other than the normal condition, you are encouraged to look at the Weight Management section of this site. You may also want to sign up for online consultation with one of our Weight Management professionals.
